Fourth International Medical Olympicus Contest

A few words from the President of the Organizing Committee

Dear Colleagues,

It is well known that working on prototype research of social interest is preferred than working on research in order to increase our C.V. Quality versus quantity of papers from all medical specialties, medical pharmacology and technology is what we wish to have.

One way to improve quality of our research is communicate with other colleagues, from all medical specialties discussing and evaluating our scientific work. This is what we wish to have in the Contests.

Medicine is considered the most important among all sciences. According to Hippocrates, medicine is the only science that can treat disease and offer better conditions of living. Socrates considered that a physician as being an “educated man” should express honesty, reason, humility and should control his pleasures. We may add that physicians when treating others can retrieve happiness.

The schedule of the Olympiad is organized very carefully, as to be concise and offer useful prototype knowledge. The first prize is dedicated to the distinguished medical scientist Anastasios Tousimis from Meryland.

In the 4th Contest we shall have for the first time an additional contest similar to that in ancient medical Contests, in Efessos. Three sets of questions will be distributed to all patricians and the best asses will be rewarded. This event is dedicated to the distinguished medical scientist George Sfakianakis from Florida.

Furthermore, for the first time we shall have a working lunch meeting of the advisors and members of the administrative board. This meeting will take place in the premises of our association in Hermou 51 street, 6th floor, on Saturday evening, 4th of November 2017.

On Sunday morning November 5 2017 all participants and friends are requested to participate to an excursion to Alexander the Great capital, Pella-museum, to Edessa falls and museum of living reptiles, and to Loutraki hot spa-38o Celcium and the only Paleolithic museum.

We welcome you all and hope that you will experience a fruitful and pleasant stay during the 4th Medical Olympicus Contest.

Both these two prizes will be gold plated or golden and accompanied by a diploma and a monetary prize.

As in all previous Olympiads, three prizes will be awarded to the three best papers among all and will be accompanied by a diploma and a gift.

In the 4th Contest for the first time will be another contest. The winner of this contest will be the one to give the best answers to 3 existing medical problems- questions. These questions are mentioned below. In ancient Olympics, there was a similar contest and prize. We know that similar medical contests were held in Ancient Olympics in the city of Efessos, Asia Minor and in other ancient Greek cities. One of the questions asked in Efessos was: What you may diagnose in a patient with very pale face etc. and what you will suggest for treatment.

The three questions to be answered referred to the following subjects:

Subject 1. Description: A 40 years old man feels very tired after intense physical exercise walk for 3km.

Questions: a) Can you give the complete definition of fatigue? Describe findings in various systems, mainly the respiratory, cardiovascular, tendomuscular and nervous systems.

b) When you expect the above man will be completely rested? Describe rest as opposite to the above findings of fatigue.

Subject 2. Description: A patient with an intense back pain has a heavy headache, a flash on his face and feels warm and heavy head. His blood pressure, heart beats and respiration are normal.

Questions: Can you support or reject the following?: a) The brain secretes endorphins or other substances in response and in order to ease pain.

b) The brain when the patient is in a status of intense pain or stress, functions independently in order to respond to pain. This brain response has no influence on heart rate and respiration.

Subject 3. Description: The director of a firm -a 40 years old man in good health- asks his physician to suggest to him: a) the best place to go for his summer holidays and b) to tell him for how long is best to have his holiday programme.

Questions: If you were the physician would you suggest: a) a place at sea level, at 200m height, or 400m height and why and b) for how long the summer holidays must last in order to be of best health benefit to the director?
